We use Perron method to construct a weak solution to a two-phase free boundary problem with right-hand-side. We thus extend the results of the pioneer work of Caffarelli for the homogeneous case

The Relationship Between the Sersic Law Profiles Measured Along the Major and Minor Axes of Elliptical Galaxies

In this paper we discuss the reason why the parameters of the Sersic model best-fitting the major axis light profile of elliptical galaxies can differ significantly from those derived for the minor axis profile. We show that this discrepancy is a natural consequence of the fact that the isophote eccentricity varies with the radius of the isophote and present a mathematical transformation that allows the minor axis Sersic model to be calculated from the major axis model, provided that the elliptical isophotes are aligned and concentric and that their eccentricity can be represented by a well behaved, though quite general, function of the radius. When there is no variation in eccentricity only the effective radius changes in the Sersic model, while for radial-dependent eccentricity the transformation which allows the minor axis Sersic model to be calculated from the major axis model is given by the Lerch Phi transcendental function. The proposed transformation was tested using photometric data for 28 early-type galaxies.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, LaTex with mn2e.cls. Accepted to MNRA

Po-production in lead: A benchmark between Geant4, FLUKA and MCNPX

On the last SATIF a comparison between the measured activities of the polonium isotopes Po-208, Po-209 and Po-210 and the simulated results using MCNPX2.7.0 was presented. The lead samples were cut from the SINQ spallation target at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) and irradiated in 2000/2001 by 575 MeV protons. The Po-isotopes were separated using radiochemical methods by the group of D. Schumann at PSI and measured. Choosing the default model in MCNPX, Bertini-Dresner, the prediction underestimated the measured activities by up to several orders of magnitude. Therefore the Li\`ege intranuclear-cascade model (INCL4.6) coupled to the de-excitation model ABLA07 were implemented into MCNPX2.7.0 and very good agreement was found to the measurement. The reason for the disagreement was traced back to a suppression of alpha reactions on the lead isotopes leading to Po and neglecting the triton capture on Pb-208, which leads to Pb-210 and decays into Po-210 with a much longer life time (22.3 years) than the decay of Po-210 itself (138 days). The prediction of the Po-isotope activities turns out to be a sensitive test for models and codes as it requires the accurate treatment of reaction channels not only with neutrons, protons and pions but also with alphas and tritons, which are not considered in intra-nuclear cascade models of the first generation. Therefore it was decided to perform a benchmark by comparing the results obtained with MCNPX2.7.0 using INCL4.6/ABLA07 to the predictions of FLUKA and Geant4. Since the model of the SINQ spallation source requires an elaborate geometry a toy model was setup. The toy model has a simplified geometry preserving the main features of the original geometry. The results for the activities of the three Po-isotopes and Pb-210 as well as the energy spectra for alphas and tritons obtained with the three particle transport Monte Carlo codes are presented.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, Presented paper at the 13th Meeting of the task-force on Shielding aspects of Accelerators, Targets and Irradiation Facilities (SATIF-13), HZDR, October 10-12, 2016, Dresden, German

Ports, external costs, and Northern Italian transport network design: effects for the planned transformation

    Get PDF
Modern ports need to be inserted in an efficient network in order to exploit all their potential, positively affecting both the efficiency of the local markets and the external costs of the served industries. Moreover, the role of the ports within the whole supply chain is affected by the location and the organization of intermediate facilities\u2014such as logistics parks or inland ports\u2014that heavily influence both the effectiveness of the logistics corridors and the externalities generated by the transport industry. New and adequate infrastructures can then reduce congestions, pollution, and accidents smoothing the whole logistics chains. The proposed study aims at discussing the effects in terms of rail share of the different planned interventions that are aimed at increasing the rail capacity of the network under investigation. In order to achieve this goal, a network optimization model has been solved by the optimizer solver of a spreadsheet. Outcomes can be used in order to improve current transport policies that might foster a more efficient and less impacting hinterland transport solutio

AbstractRecognizing human activities and monitoring population behavior are fundamental needs of our society. Population security, crowd surveillance, healthcare support and living assistance, and lifestyle and behavior tracking are some of the main applications that require the recognition of human activities. Over the past few decades, researchers have investigated techniques that can automatically recognize human activities. This line of research is commonly known as Human Activity Recognition (HAR). HAR involves many tasks: from signals acquisition to activity classification. The tasks involved are not simple and often require dedicated hardware, sophisticated engineering, and computational and statistical techniques for data preprocessing and analysis. Over the years, different techniques have been tested and different solutions have been proposed to achieve a classification process that provides reliable results. This survey presents the most recent solutions proposed for each task in the human activity classification process, that is, acquisition, preprocessing, data segmentation, feature extraction, and classification. Solutions are analyzed by emphasizing their strengths and weaknesses. For completeness, the survey also presents the metrics commonly used to evaluate the goodness of a classifier and the datasets of inertial signals from smartphones that are mostly used in the evaluation phase

Focus on headache as an adverse reaction to drugs

    Get PDF
There are a large number of drugs inducing headache as an adverse reaction. Nevertheless, headaches as adverse reactions to drugs have received limited attention. Non-serious adverse reactions, such as headache, are not quantified and described as accurately as serious, life threatening ones. However, non-serious reactions can also be extremely troublesome, above all when they are chronic: they can affect patients' quality of life and contribute to non-compliance. It is absolutely possible that the number of patients with headache as an adverse reaction, which is going to increase, considering the growing use of medications. Physicians should, therefore, be aware of this issue. Indeed, it is difficult to attribute the diagnosis of adverse drug reaction to a condition, headache, which is also a very common symptom in general population

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for the high mortality rate in many countries, therefore, they have been widely studied recently. The objective of this research was to evaluate the concentration of cholesterol and its fractions, triglycerides and blood pressure in humans. This study was divided into three treatments (placebo, statin, and ômega-3) with a 1200 calorie diet per day for all groups of eight patients. The following parameters were evaluated on day 0 and day 30: anthropometry (weight); clinical assessment (arterial pressure), and biochemistry (total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides). The findings show that in the diet treatment there was weight loss, decrease of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, SAP, and DAP, and increase of LDL-cholesterol. In the statin treatment there was weight loss, decrease of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, SAP, and DA, and increase of HDL-cholesterol. In the ômega-3 treatment it was verified weight loss, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides; increase of values of SAP and DAP, and the levels of HDL-cholesterol remained constant
